Small Dogs That Don’t Bark
#

Small dogs have a reputation for being yappy — and many earn it. But these 8 breeds are naturally quiet. They may alert bark at the doorbell, but they won’t serenade every squirrel, leaf, and neighbor that passes by.

1. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
#

The quietest small breed we’ve found. Cavaliers are too gentle-natured to be nuisance barkers. They might give a soft woof at the door, then go back to napping on your lap. 13–18 lbs. Read the full guide →

2. French Bulldog
#

Frenchies rarely bark. When they do vocalize, it’s usually a snort, grumble, or dramatic sigh — not the window-rattling bark you’d get from a terrier. They were bred as companion dogs, not watchdogs. 16–28 lbs. Read the full guide →

3. Havanese
#

Naturally quiet and gentle-voiced. A Havanese will greet you with a wagging tail and happy dance, not a bark. They’re one of the few toy breeds that haven’t developed a barking reputation. 7–13 lbs. Read the full guide →

4. Pug
#

Pugs make noise — snorts, wheezes, grunts — but barking isn’t their thing. They’re too lazy to waste energy barking at every leaf. When they do bark, it’s a low, almost comical “woof” that sounds like a question. 14–18 lbs. Read the full guide →

5. Shih Tzu
#

Shih Tzus are alert but not vocal. They were bred for centuries to sit quietly in palaces — barking would have been frowned upon by Chinese emperors. A Shih Tzu will watch strangers calmly rather than sound the alarm. 9–16 lbs. Read the full guide →

6. Boston Terrier
#

Boston Terriers are quiet dogs — they’ll alert bark at the doorbell but won’t bark at nothing. They’re too busy being friendly to everyone to waste time on noise. 12–25 lbs. Read the full guide →

7. Italian Greyhound
#

The smallest sighthound is virtually bark-free. Italian Greyhounds communicate through body language — shivering, leaning, and giving you “the look” — rather than barking. They’re sensitive, gentle, and need a warm lap and a soft blanket. 7–14 lbs. Not yet in our database — see similar: Whippet-type breeds.

8. Maltese
#

Maltese are moderate barkers — they’ll announce visitors but won’t bark obsessively. With basic training, they learn to settle quickly. At 4–7 pounds, even when they do bark, it’s a tiny voice. Read the full guide →

Why Small Dogs Bark (And How to Quiet Them)
#

Small dogs bark for three reasons: boredom (under-exercised), anxiety (left alone too long), and reinforcement (we laugh when the tiny dog barks, which teaches them barking = attention). The solution for any breed: adequate exercise, companionship, and training from day one. A tired, secure, well-trained dog of any size is a quiet dog.
